God's Sword of Truth - The Word

What is Faith?

By The Holy Spirit's Disciple, Raymond Laginess

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Our faith is our title deed to eternal life. Just as a title deed is evidence of real estate, so our faith is evidence of our eternal estate in God, "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18.

Faith is taking God at His Word and asking no questions, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Hebrews 11:6.

Faith is knowing that; "...all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28.

Faith is knowing that His grace is sufficient, "My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9.

The Nature of faith is the .............

Fruit of the Spirit;"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law."Galatians 5:23-24.

Work of God; "Jesus answered and said unto them, this is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." John 6:29.

Comes from the heart; "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9,10.

Trusting; "Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" Matthews 6:25.

Faith in God; "And Jesus answering saith unto them, have Faith in God." Mark 11:22.

Faith that yields; Identifies us with Christ in His resurrection. This is abundant life! "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory."Colossians 3:1-4.

Living by Faith;"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed, always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken, we also believe, and therefore speak; knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many rebound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but through our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." 2 Cor. 4:6-18.

Faith glories in tribulation; "....but we glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope; and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." Romans 5:3-5.

Faith chooses to suffer; "Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season." Hebrews 12:25.

Faith comes by hearing the word of God;"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:7.

Through faith;"Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."Hebrews 11:3.

By faith; "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him; for before his translation he had this testimony that he pleased God." Hebrews 11:5

Without faith; "But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."Hebrews 11:6.

Again by faith; "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise."Hebrews 11:7-9.

Again, through faith;"Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised." Hebrews 11:11.

"The just shall live by faith." This declaration of the Christian's principle of life is found four times in the Bible: Jewish History, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:10 and Hebrews 10:38. In Jewish History we see the difference between the lives of the unjust and the just. The unjust are puffed up and live by their own self-sufficiency. But the just live by faith, their confidence is in God. To them, faith is more than a philosophy of life; it is the very principle of life.

The righteous shall live his whole life by faith. He is saved by faith, "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31. He is kept by faith, "Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." 1 Peter 1:5. And he lives by faith, "I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20. Our faith shall be tried many times and in many ways, "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ; whom having not seen, ye love; In whom, though now ye seen him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory; receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls." 1 Peter 1:7-9.

Faith knows how to wait on the Lord;"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Jewish History. And it is always victorious, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God." 1 John 5:4-5.

Faith defies reason; it moves mountains; read Matthew 17:14-21. Faith does not always face facts; it never gives up, "By faith, the harlot Rehab perished not with them that believed not when she had received the spies with peace." Hebrews 11:32-39. Faith says, "God is working out His perfect will in my life, and I can wait, endure and suffer." Faith does not make anything easy, but it does make all things possible.

The importance of our faith;"Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." Ephesians 6:16.

Little faith; "And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, Oh thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou are the Son of God."Matthew 14:28-33.

Kinds of faith; Limited and Unlimited. read John 11:21-44.

Limited faith; Limited faith restricts the power of Christ, "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief." Matthew 13:58.

Unlimited faith; Unlimited faith is knowing that, "for we walk by faith, not by sight." 2 Cor. 5:7.

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1 & 2.

Let us each have faith as a grain of mustard seed...and nothing shall be impossible unto us! Read Matthew 17:20.

With our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be strong through him in us.......that is my prayer for you! Amen
