Scripture

God's Revelation of Truth

By The Holy Spirit's Disciple, Raymond Laginess

Called:

WORD OF GOD --- Hebrews 4:12 --- "For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edge sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

WORD OF TRUTH --- James 1:18 --- "Of his Own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures."

ORACLES OF GOD --- Romans 3:2 --- "Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God."

WORD --- James 1:21-23--- "For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass."

HOLY SCRIPTURES --- Romans --- "Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the Holy Scriptures."

SWORD OF THE SPIRIT --- Ephesians 6:17 --- "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God."

SCRIPTURES OF THE PROPHETS ---Romans 16:26 --- "But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith."

Described as:

AUTHORITATIVE --- 1 Peter 4:11 --- "If any speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever, Amen."

INSPIRED --- 2 Tim. 3:16 --- "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction, in righteousness."

EFFECTUAL IN LIFE --- 1 Thessalonians 2:13 --- "For this cause also thank God without ceasing, because when ye received the Word of God which ye heard of us ye received it not as the Word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God, which effectually workith in you that believe."

TRUE --- (Jewish History - Ps. 119-160 --- "Thy Word is true from the beginning; and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth forever."

PERFECT AND SHARP --- Hebrews 4:12 --- "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the souls; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple."

PURE --- (Jewish History - Ps.) ---"Every Word is pure, He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him."

The inspiration of the scriptures is proved by:

EXTERNAL EVIDENCE --- Hebrews 2:1-4 --- "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip away. For the Word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him, God also bearing them witness, both with sings and wonders, and with divers miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will."

INTERNAL NATURE --- 2 Tim. 3:16-17 --- "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable, for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

INFALLIBILITY --- John 10:35 --- "If he called them gods, unto whom the Word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken."

FULFILLMENT OF PROPHESY --- John 5:39, 45-47 --- "Search the scriptures: For in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me. Do you think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one that accuseth you to the Father there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: For he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words."

Understanding of the scriptures by:

SPIRITS ILLUMINATION --- 1 Corinthians 2:10-14 --- "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit; For the Spirit; searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God; For what man knoweth the things of man, save the Spirit of man, which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might now the things that are freely given to us. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

PRODUCING FAITH --- John 20:31 --- "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing, ye might have life through his name."

SEARCHING OUR HEARTS --- Hebrews 4:12 --- "For the word of God - - - is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

REASONING --- Acts 17:2 --- "And Paul, as his manner was, sent in unto them, and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures."

COMPARING --- 2 Peter 1:20 --- "Knowing this first that no prophesy of the scripture is of any private interpretation."

HUMAN HELP --- Acts 8:27-35 --- "And he arose and went, and, behold a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, was returning, and sitting in his chariot, read Isaiah the prophet (Jewish History). Then the Spirit said unto Philip, go near and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Isaiah, and said, understandest thou readest? And he said how can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with Him. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth; in his humiliation, his judgment was taken away; and who shall declare his generation?, for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this?, of himself, or of some other man?, then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same scripture and preached unto him Jesus."

Proper uses of:

REGENERATION ---- 1 Peter 1:23 --- "Being Born-Again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

SALVATION --- 2 Timothy 3:3-15 --- "And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

SPIRITUAL GROWTH --- Acts 20-32 --- "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of his grace, Which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

SANCTIFICATION --- John 17:17 --- "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy Word is truth."

ILLUMINATION --- (Jewish History - Ps. 19:8)--- "The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes."

KEEPING FROM SIN --- (Jewish History - Ps. 119:9-11) --- "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

DEFEATING SATAN --- Ephesians 6:16,17 --- "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

PROVING DOCTRINE --- Acts 18:28 --- "For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ."

Misuses of scripture by:

SATAN --- Matthew 4:6 --- "And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down; for it is written, HE SHALL GIVE his angels charge concerning thee; and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone (verse 7). Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

HYPOCRITES --- Matthew 22:23-29 --- "The same day came to him the Sadducee, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and having no issue, left his wife unto his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the last. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of seven? For they all had her. Jesus answered and said, ye do err, you know not scripture, nor God. None shall have her, for they are as the angels.

FALSE TEACHERS --- 2 Peter 2:1 --- "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." (Also see 2 Corinthians 2:17).

IGNORANT --- 2 Peter 3:16 --- "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

Positive attitudes towards the scriptures:

LET DWELL IN RICHLY --- Colossians 3:16 --- "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

SEARCH DAILY --- Acts 17:11 --- "These were more noble than those in Thessalonia, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

HIDE IN THE HEART --- (Jewish History - Ps. 119-11) --- "Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

DELIGHT IN, AND MEDIATE DAY AND NIGHT --- (Jewish History - Ps. 1-2 ) --- "But in his delight is in the law of the Lord; and his law doth he meditate day and night."

LOVE --- (Jewish History - Ps. 119:167) --- "My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly."

RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS --- James 1:21 --- "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls."

OBEY THE WORD --- James 1:22 --- "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own souls."

Negative attitudes toward scripture, do not:

ADD TO OR SUBTRACT FROM --- Revelations 22:18-19 --- "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesy of this book. If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book; and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the Holy City, and from the things which are written in this book."

CORRUPT --- 2 Corinthians 2:17 --- "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God; as of sincerity, but as of God in the sight of God speak we in Christ."

HANDLE DECEITFULLY --- 2 Corinthians 4:2 --- "But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not wailing in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth, commending ourselves every man's conscience in the sight of God."

WREST --- 2 Peter 3:16 --- "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they are that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

DEATH --- Luke 24:17, 45:47 --- "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures they things concerning himself. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus is behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem."

REJECTION --- Acts 28:25-29 --- "And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, Saying go unto his people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall not perceive; for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and they will hear it. And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves."

RESURRECTION --- Acts 2:24-31 --- "For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face; for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh."

NULLIFY BY TRADITIONS--- Mark 7:9-13 --- "And he said unto them, full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, whoso curse father or mother, let him die the death, but ye say, if a man shall say to his father or mother, it is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightiest be profited by me; he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or his mother; Making the Word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered; and many such like things do ye."

Fulfillment of the scriptures cited to show:

GOSPEL AGE --- Acts 3:24 --- "Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days."

CHRIST'S MISSION --- Luke 4:16-21 --- "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. [17] And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written. [18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering the sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. [20] And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. [21] And be began to say unto them, This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears".

SPIRIT'S DESCENT --- John 7:38-39 --- "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive; for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified."

FAITH --- Romans 4:3 --- "For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."

REVELATION --- Revelations Chapter 1 to 3 --- "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein; for the time is at hand. Amen, and Amen."
