God's Sword of Truth - The Word

Exhortation (admonition)

By The Holy Spirit's Disciple, Raymond Laginess

OBJECTS OF EXHORTATION (Meaning...encourage others to commendable conduct.)

Call to Repentance....LUKE 3:17,18...."Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people."

Continue in the Faith....ACTS 14:22...."Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we much through must tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."

Convict Gainsayers....TITUS 1:9...."Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers." [Gainsayers....those who contradict, speak against or oppose the Gospel of Jesus Christ].

Warn the Unruly....1 THESS. 5:14...."Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men."

Encourage soberness....TITUS 2:6...."Young men likewise exhort to be sober-minded." [Sober-minded means self-controlled].

Strengthen Godliness....1 THESS. 4:1-6...."Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor. Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God; that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter; because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified."

Stir up Liberality....2 COR. 9:5-7...."Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity; for God loveth a cheerful giver."

We are charged before God to exhort....2 TIM. 4:1-4...."I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

NATURE OF EXHORTATION (Meaning....to urge)
Daily Duty....HEB. 3:13...."But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."

For Holiness....1 THESS. 2:3...."For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleannness, nor of guile."

Worthy of Reception....HEB. 13:22...."And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation; for I have written a letter unto you in few words."

Belongs to all....HEB. 10:25...."Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." ["the day"....meaning the "end"].

Special need of exhortation....JUDE. 4...."For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." JUDE. 3...."Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."

When Barnabas went to Antioch....ACTS 11:23...."Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord."

Paul to the Thessalonians....1 THESS. 2:11...."As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children."
