God's Sword of Truth - The Word

Customs & Traditions

By The Holy Spirit's Disciple, Steve Laginess

Christians are spiritual. Pagans, heathens and non-believers are worldly, therefore it takes the things of the flesh to satisfy them (or worldly things).

Religious customs and traditions have been handed down to us through the years by man. Other than the original customs and laws given by God to the Jew until the death of Christ took place, all other tradition was instituted by man.

But yet we are told we are not of this world, we are a peculiar people, we are not to follow after the traditions of men. We are told not to follow their philosophies and vain deceit. Yet, we naturally accept mans ideas of what honors God. We accept the plasticity of holidays and traditions and not the things that God told us to mind that truly are spiritual. We do just the opposite by setting our affections on the things of the world whether it be daily or once a year.

God tells us to be holy. We are not. To set our affection (no matter how sincere we believe ourselves to be) on a day when we think we are honoring God or Christ, where the emphasis for most people is "getting", where we come up with a multitude of excuses for dressing up to go worship God (vanity), or dressing up our homes in the festival of lights, statues and ornaments that become fixtures for a couple of months and commands our attention and admiration, is nothing more than a form of idolatry and no doubt grieves our loving Lord.

Christ and His apostles never celebrated His birthday at anytime and we were never commanded to do so. MAN created it, NOT GOD!

And if we are not willing as Christ teaches us, to study to show ourselves approved and to discern with our spirit and our hearts the true meaning and origin of man-made holidays and traditions, setting our true affections on the things of this earth, using excuses to compensate for our idolatrous hearts and that "it is a good time for families to get together" when our families (what little of them we have left) need us the whole year long in these last days.

If we cannot tend to the matters that are spiritual in order to keep ourselves from such bondage and hypocrisy, if we cannot quit taking it upon ourselves to cloak such a day in our manufactured holiness and piety, then we will need to come up with many, many more excuses when we stand before almighty God to plead our ignorance because it was our pleasure that was more important than Gods.

We, as Christians, need to be doers, not followers. We need to be God's sheep, but not sheep thru the inventions of man's mind.

Soon, the Lord will return for His own. And which church will He return for? After we have gone home to be with the Lord forever, Christmas will continue to go on. But wait! If the Holy Spirit is gone from this world forever, if those who have refused God's commands were left behind to continue to celebrate it, then whose spirit shall rule such holidays and traditions?  It is IMPOSSIBLE for it to be God's Spirit.  Therefore, I rest my case!
